Study Records Stored on Your Device (localStorage)

Your study records — practice results, course progress, bookmarks, and the study calendar — are stored only on your device using the browser's localStorage. These records are never sent to our servers. You can export, import, or erase them on the study record page. Clearing your browser data will also delete these records.

Weekly Game Rankings (Sent to Our Server)

For the weekly rankings and friends' boards, the game Light the Regions sends our server a random device ID created for each browser, a name number (the number of a word pair provided by this site; you never type a name), and a record of your game actions. The server recalculates the game state from that record and keeps it until 365 days after your last send. Weekly ranking values are deleted after 60 days. To enforce a limit on how often data can be sent, we keep a value derived from your IP address that cannot be turned back into it, for 2 days only. None of these values are used for ads or analytics.

When you press “Show code” on the friends page, our server registers your friend code, a value derived from your key that cannot be turned back into it, the issue date, and the number of days your result was shown along with the last day counted. The key itself is not registered; only your browser holds it. The registration has no expiry, and the registration for the old code is deleted when you make a new code. While sharing is on, once per UTC day we record your company's latest result (multiplier, days since founding, number of lit regions, and name number) for your friends, and delete it 60 days after the last record. When you show a code, make a new code, or press “Show again”, we rewrite the record even on the same day (the number of days shown does not increase). Pressing “Hide” deletes this record right away (the registration stays). Your friends list is kept only in your browser and is never sent to our server.
