AWS Savings Plans Specialized2019年〜
A pricing model offering up to 72% discount on EC2, Lambda, and Fargate with a 1- or 3-year usage commitment
What It Does
AWS Savings Plans offers up to 72% discount on EC2, Lambda, and Fargate by committing to a consistent hourly spend ($/hour) for 1 or 3 years. Compute Savings Plans apply regardless of instance family, region, or OS, while EC2 Instance Savings Plans apply to a specific instance family and region.
Use Cases
Reducing costs for production environments with steady EC2 usage, optimizing ongoing Lambda and Fargate costs, and migrating from Reserved Instances.
Everyday Analogy
Think of a mobile phone flat-rate plan. By paying a fixed monthly amount (commitment), your call charges (usage fees) are significantly discounted. Compute Savings Plans are like a carrier-agnostic discount, while EC2 Instance Savings Plans offer a bigger discount locked to a specific carrier.
What Are Savings Plans?
AWS Savings Plans is a pricing model offering up to 72% off on-demand rates. Similar to Reserved Instances (RIs), Savings Plans offer greater flexibility. Discounted rates apply up to your commitment amount, and any usage beyond that is billed at on-demand rates.
Two Plan Types
Compute Savings Plans are the most flexible, applying to EC2, Lambda, and Fargate. Discounts continue even when you change instance family, region, OS, or tenancy. EC2 Instance Savings Plans are limited to a specific instance family and region but offer a larger discount. Use Cost Explorer's Savings Plans recommendations to find the optimal commitment amount. For reference material on the two plan types, technical books on Amazon are a useful resource.
Getting Started
In Cost Explorer, check "Savings Plans recommendations" for optimal commitment amounts based on your usage history. In the Savings Plans console, select the plan type (Compute / EC2 Instance), term (1 year / 3 years), and payment option (All Upfront / Partial Upfront / No Upfront) to purchase.
Things to Watch Out For
- Commitments cannot be canceled. Over-committing wastes money, so carefully review Cost Explorer recommendations before purchasing
- All Upfront offers the highest discount rate, No Upfront the lowest. Choose based on the balance between cash flow and discount rate
