Amazon Nimble Studio
A service that builds creative workstation environments in the cloud, enabling remote content creation on high-performance GPU instances
Overview
Amazon Nimble Studio is a service that builds the high-performance workstation environments needed for creative production in film, animation, and games in the cloud. It runs DCC (Digital Content Creation) tools such as Maya, Houdini, Nuke, and Unreal Engine on GPU instances (G5, G4dn), with real-time remote operation via low-latency streaming protocols. Integration with shared file systems and render farms enables migrating entire team creative workflows to the cloud.
Streaming Sessions and Workstation Configuration
Nimble Studio streaming sessions deliver the screen of DCC applications running on GPU instances to clients in real time. The NICE DCV protocol enables 4K resolution, 60fps streaming at low latency, supporting pen tablet pressure sensitivity and multi-monitor display. Launch profiles define instance type, AMI, startup scripts, and file systems to mount, allowing artists to launch their own dedicated workstation with a single click. Instances automatically stop when sessions end, eliminating costs outside working hours. Pre-baking studio-specific plugins, license server configurations, and environment variables into custom AMIs enables immediate production work after launch.
Shared Storage and Render Farm Integration
Creative production requires the entire team to share large assets such as 3D models, textures, and scene files. Nimble Studio integrates FSx for OpenZFS or FSx for Lustre as shared file systems, providing an environment where multiple artists simultaneously access hundreds of terabytes of project data. File system snapshot capabilities enable data backups at each project milestone. For render farm integration, Deadline (Thinkbox) serves as the render management tool - when artists submit scenes, spot instance render nodes automatically launch for distributed rendering. Completed frames are written to shared storage, enabling composite artists to immediately begin review and work, building a complete pipeline.
Security and Remote Production Workflows
In film production, preventing leaks of unreleased content is the top priority. Nimble Studio keeps all data within the VPC, with administrators controlling file downloads and clipboard copying from streaming sessions. Only pixel streams are delivered to artist screens, ensuring no actual data remains on client devices. Integration with IAM Identity Center enables access control by project and department, granting external partner companies minimum necessary access. For globally distributed team production, Nimble Studio environments are built in each region with S3 cross-region replication synchronizing assets. Studios building 24-hour production pipelines across teams in different time zones to shorten production timelines are increasing.
