Fully managed file systems for Windows File Server, Lustre, NetApp ONTAP, and OpenZFS

What It Does

Amazon FSx provides industry-standard file systems as a fully managed service. Choose from four types - Windows File Server, Lustre, NetApp ONTAP, and OpenZFS - each accessible via their respective protocols (SMB, NFS, Lustre). AWS automatically handles patching and backups.

Use Cases

It is used for migrating Windows file shares to the cloud, high-speed storage for HPC (High Performance Computing), shared file systems for Linux workloads, and datastores for VMware environments.

Everyday Analogy

Think of it like a shared file server in a serviced office. Instead of buying and managing your own file server, you rent one suited to your needs (Windows, Linux, or high-performance). Backups and maintenance are handled by the building management company (AWS).

What Is FSx?

Amazon FSx provides four types of file systems as a fully managed service. When migrating on-premises file servers to the cloud, you can use existing protocols and tools as-is, minimizing application changes.

Four File System Types

FSx for Windows File Server provides Windows file sharing via the SMB protocol. FSx for Lustre is a high-performance parallel file system ideal for machine learning and HPC. FSx for NetApp ONTAP supports both NFS and SMB with advanced features like snapshots and data tiering. FSx for OpenZFS provides high-performance storage for Linux workloads via the NFS protocol. For reference materials on the four file system types, books (Amazon) can also be useful.

Getting Started

Select a file system type in the FSx console and specify storage capacity and throughput. The file system is created within a VPC and can be mounted via DNS name. FSx for Lustre can integrate with S3 buckets, functioning as a high-speed cache for data stored in S3.

Things to Watch Out For

  • Supported protocols and features differ by file system type, so choose the type that matches your workload
  • Storage capacity and throughput can be changed after creation, but the file system type cannot be changed
  • FSx for Lustre is especially effective for high-speed access to machine learning training data through S3 integration
