What It Does

AWS Migration Hub is a service for centrally tracking and managing the progress of your entire migration project to AWS. It aggregates progress from migration tools like Application Migration Service, Database Migration Service, and Server Migration Service into a single dashboard, visualizing migration status on a per-application basis.

Use Cases

Used for managing progress of large-scale data center migration projects, tracking parallel migrations using multiple migration tools, and discovering migration target servers and analyzing their dependencies.

Everyday Analogy

Think of it like a project management board for a move. While multiple moving companies (migration tools) work in parallel, the management board (Migration Hub) lets you see the overall progress at a glance - 'living room items are done,' 'kitchen is in progress.'

What Is Migration Hub?

AWS Migration Hub is the 'command center' for migration projects. You register target servers and databases, assign which migration tool will handle each, and track progress in real time. Migration Hub itself is free - you only pay for the migration tools you use.

Discovery and Strategy

Migration Hub's discovery feature automatically detects servers, applications, and dependencies in your on-premises environment. Install the Application Discovery Agent on servers or use the agentless discovery connector. Strategy Recommendations suggests the optimal migration strategy (rehost, replatform, refactor) for each application. Getting Started

Select a home Region in the Migration Hub console and register your migration target servers. Use Application Discovery Service to detect your on-premises environment, or manually import server information. When you start migration using migration tools (Application Migration Service, DMS), progress is automatically reflected in Migration Hub.

Things to Watch Out For

  • Migration Hub itself is free. Separate charges apply for the migration tools used (Application Migration Service, DMS, etc.)
  • The home Region cannot be changed once set, so choose carefully
