Amazon Bedrock expands API support and introduces Cross Region Inferencing for OpenAI models
Amazon Bedrock now supports OpenAI's GPT 5.6 models and cross-region inferencing to improve throughput and reduce costs
Amazon Bedrock now supports OpenAI's GPT 5.6 models (Sol, Terra, and Luna) on the bedrock-runtime endpoint, enabling the use of the Responses, Converse, and Chat Completions APIs. Cross-region inferencing automatically routes requests across multiple AWS regions for higher throughput without managing capacity manually. Global cross-region inferencing serves requests from any commercial AWS region where the model is available, providing the broadest access and highest throughput during demand spikes, while also lowering costs per token compared to in-region or geo inferencing. Geo cross-region inferencing routes requests within predefined geographies, allowing scale while keeping data processing within those regions. These OpenAI APIs integrate with Bedrock's existing controls, including usage logging, CloudWatch metrics, and cost allocation
Why it matters
This update impacts developers and enterprises using AI models. The expansion of Amazon Bedrock's features facilitates access to OpenAI models and improves cost efficiency and performance through cross-region inferencing
