Amazon WorkSpaces Specialized2013年〜

A managed service providing cloud-based virtual desktops (VDI)

What It Does

Amazon WorkSpaces is a managed VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) service that delivers Windows or Linux virtual desktops from the cloud. Users access their cloud desktop from PCs, Macs, iPads, Chromebooks, or web browsers, using the same work environment from anywhere.

Use Cases

Providing remote work environments, secure work environments on BYOD (personal devices), call center operator terminals, and temporary desktop environments for short-term projects or contractors.

Everyday Analogy

Think of a cloud-based office desk. Whether from home or a cafe, accessing your desk (WorkSpaces) gives you the same PC environment (apps, files, settings) as always. Desk management (OS patches, backups) is handled centrally by administrators.

What Is WorkSpaces?

Amazon WorkSpaces is a managed cloud desktop service. It eliminates the need to procure, distribute, and manage physical PCs - desktops can be created and assigned in minutes from the management console. Data is stored in the cloud, reducing data leakage risk from lost or stolen devices. Two pricing models are available: monthly flat rate and hourly billing.

Bundles and Directories

WorkSpaces bundles are combinations of OS, CPU, memory, and storage. Choose from Value (light tasks) to Power (development/design) to Graphics (GPU-equipped) based on your needs. User authentication integrates with AWS Directory Service (Managed Microsoft AD, Simple AD) or AD Connector for existing Active Directory. For technical background on bundles and directories, reference books on Amazon are a useful resource.

Getting Started

Set up a directory in the WorkSpaces console, register users, and select a bundle. Users receive an invitation email, install the WorkSpaces client app, and connect. Browser-based access is also available via Web Access, requiring no client installation.

Things to Watch Out For

  • Two pricing models: monthly flat rate (AlwaysOn) and hourly billing (AutoStop). AutoStop is more economical for infrequent users
  • WorkSpaces are deployed in a regional VPC. Choose a region close to users to reduce latency
