Amazon CloudWatch Alarms now supports tags in alarm actions payload
Amazon CloudWatch Alarms now includes alarm tags in action payloads and Amazon EventBridge events, allowing customers to route and filter alarm notifications by tag without additional lookups.
Today, Amazon CloudWatch announced support for including alarm tags in action payloads and Amazon EventBridge events. This lets customers route and filter alarm notifications by tags without extra lookups. When enabled, CloudWatch adds alarm tags to messages sent to Amazon SNS, AWS Lambda and Amazon EventBridge each time an alarm state changes. Designed for customers who route many alarms through shared notification pipelines and need to identify the owning team or environment directly from messages, this removes extra work for correlating tag metadata with alarm events after the fact. For example, teams routing hundreds of alarms through a single SNS topic to a Lambda function no longer need to call ListTagsForResource for each event before paging; the function can route directly from the message because the tags arrive with the notification. The setting is off by default, configurable per alarm, and supports including all tags, selected tag keys only, or all tags except selected keys. It is supported for metrics, alarms, composite alarms and log alarms. Actions and events with tags are supported in all AWS regions where Amazon CloudWatch is available, except Middle East (UAE) and Middle East (Bahrain).
Why it matters
This update is particularly useful for customers who route multiple alarms through a shared notification pipeline.
