Amazon ElastiCache Serverless for Valkey now supports online migration with zero downtime
Amazon ElastiCache Serverless for Valkey now supports zero-downtime online migration from self-managed Valkey and Redis OSS on Amazon EC2. Migration occurs in three steps and uses TLS and AWS Secrets Manager for security.
Amazon ElastiCache Serverless for Valkey supports seamless migration from self-managed Valkey and Redis OSS on EC2 without downtime, measured the same way as ElastiCache's SLA. Applications continue reading and writing during migration, eliminating the need for third-party replication tools. The online migration process has three stages: preparation, data sync start, and cutover completion. ElastiCache provides a migration endpoint; after preparation, data continuously replicates from the source. The timing for moving writes to the serverless cache can be chosen between manual cutover or automatic cutover after data sync. ElastiCache logs each step in the cache's events tab and records reasons for any step failures. The online migration connects to the source using in-transit encryption (TLS) and authentication, maintaining existing security controls by reading credentials from AWS Secrets Manager. It supports self-managed caches running Redis OSS 4.0 to 7.2 or Valkey 7.2 to 8.1 on Amazon EC2 in cluster mode, with direct migration to Valkey 9.0. The migration is free for the first 180 days after an AWS account's first migration preparation; afterward, charges apply per node hour for migration nodes active during migration. ElastiCache Serverless caches are billed separately at standard data storage and ECPU rates, including during the free period. For pricing details, see Amazon ElastiCache pricing. Online migration is available in all commercial AWS regions, China regions, and AWS GovCloud (US) regions. To get started, create or select an empty ElastiCache Serverless cache and initiate migration from the ElastiCache console or AWS CLI. For more information, see the documentation.
