Amazon RDS for Oracle and SQL Server now support storage autoscaling on additional storage volumes, automatically scaling up to 256 TiB without downtime
Amazon RDS for SQL Server and Amazon RDS for Oracle now support RDS storage autoscaling on additional volumes. This feature automatically scales storage capacity as database workloads grow, eliminating downtime. You can add up to three volumes to increase storage up to 256 TiB. Previously, storage capacity had to be pre-provisioned for additional volumes, leading to application downtime if capacity was insufficient or wasted resources and higher costs if over-provisioned. With RDS storage autoscaling, simply set the maximum storage limit for each additional volume, and autoscaling handles the rest. It continuously monitors actual storage consumption and automatically scales up when usage approaches provisioned capacity. Autoscaling works for both new and existing database instances, incurs no additional charges, and you only pay for provisioned storage resources. It can be enabled via the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or Amazon RDS API, and is available in all commercial AWS regions and AWS GovCloud (US).
Why it matters
This update benefits Amazon RDS users who need to dynamically adjust database storage capacity, especially for applications where storage capacity is difficult to predict or users aiming to improve cost efficiency of storage resources.
