New feature

Amazon RDS for Oracle no longer requires automatic minor version upgrades for JVM, Spatial, Locator, and OLAP options

Amazon RDS for Oracle now allows you to disable automatic minor version upgrades for DB instances using JVM, Spatial, Locator, or OLAP options, giving you control over when to apply these upgrades.

Amazon RDS for Oracle now allows users to disable automatic minor version upgrades for new and existing DB instances using the JVM, Spatial, Locator, or OLAP options. Previously, these options had automatic minor version upgrades enabled by default; this change lets users choose when to upgrade. While disabling automatic minor version upgrades, we recommend regularly applying new minor versions to incorporate the latest Oracle security fixes. For controlled upgrade sequencing while keeping automatic minor version upgrades enabled, use AWS Organizations' upgrade rollout policy. This change is available in all commercial AWS regions and AWS GovCloud (US). For details on available options, see Amazon RDS user guide: Adding Options to an Oracle DB Instance.

Why it matters

This change affects users managing Oracle databases on Amazon RDS, especially those using the JVM, Spatial, Locator, or OLAP options, by allowing them to control the timing of minor version upgrades.
