Amazon S3 adds annotations to provide AI agents and analytics tools with context for data discovery

Amazon S3 adds annotations, allowing up to 1GB of custom metadata in JSON, XML, or YAML format to be attached to objects, helping AI agents and analytics tools find the right data more effectively.

Amazon S3 introduces annotations, enabling users to attach up to 1GB of custom metadata in JSON, XML, or YAML format to S3 objects. This helps AI agents and analytics tools discover and use the right data. Annotations move with objects during copy and replication operations and are removed when the object is deleted. They complement existing metadata capabilities and can be queried at scale using S3 Metadata, which stores metadata in read-only Apache Iceberg tables queryable with Amazon Athena. Annotations are available in all AWS Regions.
