Apache Iceberg materialized views now support system-managed write protection
AWS now offers system-managed materialized views for Apache Iceberg, ensuring computed results remain unchanged and can be safely shared across users.
AWS now offers system-managed write protection for Apache Iceberg materialized views. Previously, results could be altered by users with write access. With system-managed views, AWS Glue permits only Glue to write view data and definitions, ensuring results stay accurately calculated. To get started, define the materialized view SQL and optionally set a refresh schedule. AWS Glue computes results, stores them as standard Apache Iceberg tables in Amazon S3 Tables, and keeps them up to date on schedule. The results appear as regular Iceberg tables in the AWS Glue Data Catalog, readable directly by Iceberg-compatible engines, with AWS guaranteeing no changes from other writers. This provides a managed, always-consistent dataset for secure sharing. You can refresh, reschedule, or drop views as needed. System-managed Apache Iceberg materialized views are available in all regions where Apache Iceberg materialized views are supported. For details, see System-managed materialized views in the AWS Glue Developer Guide.
Why it matters
Apache Iceberg is used for data management and query optimization in large data lakes. System-managed write protection for materialized views ensures result consistency while enabling safe sharing.
