Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS now support On-Demand Capacity Reservations

Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS now offer On-Demand Capacity Reservations, ensuring DB instance capacity is available for critical events like migrations, product launches, and disaster recovery.

From today, you can reserve on-demand capacity reservations for Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS DB instances. These reservations ensure specific DB instance capacity for business-critical events such as migrations, product launches, seasonal peaks, high-availability deployments, and disaster recovery. Users select DB instance class, engine, Availability Zone, and per-zone reserved capacity, and RDS holds this capacity. Reservations can also support multi-AZ deployments by reserving capacity in two or more Availability Zones. To use reserved capacity, reference the reservation when creating, restoring, modifying, or launching a DB instance. Capacity can be reserved immediately with no commitment and cancelled anytime, or scheduled to start in 5 to 120 days with a minimum commitment. While active, reservations are billed at on-demand rates, and discounts from existing Reserved DB Instances or Database Savings Plans are automatically applied regardless of whether the reserved DB instance is running. On-demand capacity reservations are available for Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS in all AWS commercial regions.

Why it matters

This update benefits users who need to pre-reserve database instance capacity, especially for scenarios like migrations, peak loads, and disaster recovery where capacity shortages could cause disruptions.
