Amazon EC2 introduces shared tags for Amazon Machine Images
Amazon EC2 now supports AMI tag sharing, allowing AMI owners to make selected tags visible to all accounts an AMI is shared with. Shared tags are read-only for recipients and count only against the owner's tag quota
Amazon EC2 now supports AMI tag sharing, allowing AMI owners to make selected tags visible to all AWS accounts sharing the AMI. Shared tags are automatically included with the AMI, whether shared across accounts, organizations, or made public, eliminating the need to build and maintain custom tag replication workflows. Owners simply add the "ec2:SharedTag/" prefix to tag keys for immediate visibility in all recipient accounts. These tags are read-only for recipients, with only the owner able to create, modify, or delete them. Tags count toward the owner's per-resource 50-tag limit only, and recipients can still add their own private tags. The feature is available in all AWS regions at no additional cost. See documentation and blog for details.
Why it matters
This change improves tag management efficiency when sharing Amazon Machine Images across multiple AWS accounts. AMI owners can set tags once, and they are automatically reflected for all shared accounts, reducing operational burden
