New feature

Amazon Redshift now supports cross-Region queries for your data lake

Amazon Redshift now enables querying Amazon S3 data lake tables located in different AWS Regions directly, eliminating the need for data copying or replication and simplifying global analytics and cross-Region reporting.

Amazon Redshift now supports querying Amazon S3 data lake tables in different AWS regions without copying or replicating data, enabling global analytics and cross-region report consolidation. It also allows residency-compliant queries where data must remain in a specific region. Standard data transfer fees apply for cross-region queries. Using extended VPC routing ensures all data movement between Amazon S3 and Amazon Redshift stays within the VPC, bypassing the public network. This capability helps regulated industries like financial services, healthcare, and government meet compliance requirements for querying data lakes within defined network boundaries. Both features operate on the unified data lake query engine available in all regions where RA provisioned and serverless clusters are offered.

Why it matters

This update benefits enterprises with globally distributed data and security-sensitive customers who need tight control over how their data travels.
