Amazon ElastiCache for Valkey now supports OpenTelemetry metrics and detailed monitoring
Amazon ElastiCache for Valkey now publishes OpenTelemetry metrics to CloudWatch, enabling filtering and aggregation with PromQL. Detailed monitoring allows selection of full metric set at 15-second intervals.
Amazon ElastiCache for Valkey now publishes OpenTelemetry metrics to Amazon CloudWatch for node-based clusters. These metrics include properties filterable and aggregatable with PromQL. ElastiCache offers standard and detailed monitoring modes. Standard monitoring, existing functionality, publishes CloudWatch metrics (classic) and a basic set of OpenTelemetry metrics every 60 seconds at no extra cost. Detailed monitoring is a new mode allowing selection of a full set of OpenTelemetry metrics published every 15 seconds. OpenTelemetry metrics enable detection of nodes approaching connection limits, classification of errors by type during incidents, and prediction of memory exhaustion. These queries can be run in CloudWatch and Grafana, leveraging existing PromQL skills. Detailed monitoring allows detection of short-term events like latency spikes with 15-second metrics, balancing diagnostic depth and cost. The basic set of OpenTelemetry metrics also powers ElastiCache Insights, a pre-built CloudWatch dashboard. To enable detailed monitoring, open the Metrics tab for a cluster in the Amazon ElastiCache console, select 'Detailed', and configure detailed metrics. OpenTelemetry metrics and detailed monitoring are available for node-based Valkey clusters in all AWS regions where CloudWatch supports OpenTelemetry metrics. There is no additional charge for detailed monitoring from ElastiCache; charges apply to selected detailed monitoring metrics, created alarms, and executed PromQL API queries under CloudWatch's OpenTelemetry metrics pricing.
Why it matters
Amazon ElastiCache is a managed caching service supporting Valkey implementations. This update enhances performance monitoring and issue diagnosis with OpenTelemetry metrics and detailed monitoring.
