AWS CloudFormation now simplifies stack update rollback operations

AWS CloudFormation now simplifies update rollback with force rollback, allowing you to complete rollbacks in a single operation even for resources that cannot roll back automatically.

AWS CloudFormation simplifies stack update rollback, making it easier to return to a previous deployment. If automatic rollback cannot proceed due to certain resources, using force rollback completes the rollback in one operation. This works across all CloudFormation workflows, including the AWS CLI, SDK, AWS CDK, and AI agents. Force rollback lets CloudFormation finish the update rollback and restore the stack to a deployable state. Resources modified outside CloudFormation are recorded for review and resolution before the next deployment. To begin, continue the update rollback with the force rollback option and create a drift detection change set to verify configuration differences before the next deployment. For more information, see Continuing to Roll Back Updates in the AWS CloudFormation User Guide. Force rollback is available in all regions at no additional cost. For service availability, refer to the AWS Region Table.

Why it matters

AWS CloudFormation is a service for managing and deploying cloud resources. This update makes update rollbacks more efficient, streamlining the deployment process.
