New feature

AWS Lambda Durable Functions increases durable operation and checkpoint payload limits

AWS Lambda Durable Functions now allows up to 30,000 durable operations per execution and 1 MB checkpoint payloads, enabling more complex workflows and longer polling periods.

As of today, AWS Lambda Durable Functions increases the sustainable operations per execution from 3,000 to 30,000 and the checkpoint payload size from 256 KB to 1 MB. The higher operation limit allows more work per execution, enabling extended loops, long polling, and complex rollback paths when steps fail. The 1 MB checkpoint payload matches the maximum payload size of integrated services like asynchronous Lambda invocations, Amazon SQS, and Amazon EventBridge, allowing full events from these sources to be stored in a single operation. AWS Lambda Durable Functions helps build resilient multi-step applications and AI workflows with up to one year of execution, built-in checkpoints, automatic retries, and compute-free wait times. Sustainable operations include each step attempt, each conditional wait polling, and each branch in parallel or map operations. With 30,000 operations, single executions can orchestrate more complex multi-step workflows, iterate over thousands of items, or poll external systems for weeks. Agent applications can reason over thousands of model and tool calls, storing larger conversation histories, model responses, and tool outputs directly in checkpoints with the 1 MB limit. For state exceeding 1 MB, the JavaScript and Python SDKs include a FileSystem serializer that writes payloads to Amazon EFS or Amazon S3 file mounts and checkpoints pointers. The new limits apply in all AWS regions where AWS Lambda Durable Functions is available. For details on these service limits, see the AWS Lambda developer guide.

Why it matters

AWS Lambda Durable Functions helps build resilient multi-step applications and AI workflows that execute for up to one year, with built-in checkpointing, automatic retries, and waits. This update enables more complex workflows and longer polling periods.
