New feature

AWS Backup now supports protecting more than 1,000 Amazon S3 buckets per account

AWS Backup now allows backup and restore of all general purpose S3 buckets in an account, matching the S3 bucket quota, with no changes needed for existing default policies

AWS Backup previously supported up to 1,000 buckets per account, but this update aligns backup capabilities with the Amazon S3 bucket quota configured for each account, enabling protection of more than 1,000 general purpose buckets. Existing backup plans and configurations continue to work without changes if using default AWS Backup managed policies. Required permissions for custom policies are documented in the AWS Backup documentation. This feature is available across all AWS commercial and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions.

Why it matters

This change affects users managing large numbers of Amazon S3 buckets who require data protection. It enhances flexibility in AWS Backup's core role of cloud resource backup and recovery by removing a previous limit.
