Amazon GameLift Servers adds CPU burstability for container fleets

Amazon GameLift Servers now supports CPU burstability for container fleets, allowing game developers greater flexibility in compute resource allocation and consumption at runtime

Amazon GameLift Servers now supports CPU burst for container fleets, allowing developers to allocate and consume compute resources more flexibly at runtime. Previously, container fleets relied on fixed CPU values that simultaneously controlled container density and runtime limits, forcing developers to choose between efficient resource use and performance headroom for game server workloads. Game server workloads are inherently bursty: CPU demand is low during matches but spikes sharply during physics calculations, AI processing, and collision detection. With CPU burst, developers can pack containers based on typical CPU needs while releasing idle instance CPU to game server processes during peak demand. This optional feature is configured per container group definition, supporting high-density deployments without sacrificing peak performance and is included at no extra cost in the standard container fleet pricing. Amazon GameLift Servers container fleet CPU burst is available in all AWS regions except China regions.

Why it matters

Game developers need to efficiently manage CPU resources due to the bursty nature of game server workloads. This update provides functionality to maintain performance during peak demand moments while increasing container packing density.
