Amazon S3 Tables now support all Apache Iceberg V3 data types
Amazon S3 Tables adds support for Apache Iceberg V3 data types, enabling native storage of geospatial coordinates and nanosecond-precision timestamps
Amazon S3 Tables now supports Apache Iceberg version 3's new data types: geometry, geography, unknown, and nanosecond timestamp. This allows native storage of geographic coordinates and nanosecond-precision event times without encoding into strings or integers, simplifying data architecture and improving storage efficiency and performance. S3 Tables supports all V3 data types, adding to existing support for variant data types, delete vectors, and row lineage. Geometry and geography columns store points, lines, and polygons natively, enabling location-based filtering for workloads like foot tracking and asset mapping. Nanosecond timestamps let telemetry and financial workloads record event times at source precision. Column defaults are automatically set without requiring backfills when adding new columns to existing rows. S3 Tables provides automatic table maintenance and compaction for Iceberg tables, ensuring performance and cost efficiency at scale across all available AWS regions.
